Herts and Beds Custom remaps is now part of Cole and Miller Automotives Ltd. Started as more of a hobby originally it has allowed us to get an insight into the tuning world. With the HBCR website starting to gain more and more visitors and also the demand within our company increasing we have decided to merge the two to provide a faster response to the growing levels of enquires. Remapping...what is it?
All vehicle's manufactured since 1999 are controlled by an onboard computer, which is known as the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU controls a multitude of different engine functions such as ignition timing, fuelling and turbo boost pressure. Within this computer a file stores the manufacturers settings that have been fixed to allow for build tolerances into their engines and to comply with emission targets, cope with sub-standard fuels found in some countries, operate in areas with extreme environments and allow for some owners irregular service standards and intervals. We can access these settings usually via a 16 pin port inside the vehicle and adjust them to give you a more tailored map. This can give you gains of up to 35% in power and torque and 20% better fuel economy.
How is it done?
We access your vehicles engine data with our handheld map reader, this downloads all the engine data so that we can base the new map around those settings. We then load these settings on to our laptop and send this information to our experts at BHP UK. They then write you a new map based on the settings. No two maps will be quite the same as they are all individually made to suit your vehicle.
When the map is ready they will send the new one back to us to load back on to your vehicle. Whist we wait for the map to be written your vehicle can be used as normal until the new map is ready. We can usually complete the whole process within a couple of hours depending the complexity of the new map.
Is it safe??
We will never remap your vehicle to exceed you engine limits. From the manufacturers the ECU's need to be prepared for poor fuel quality, strict emission targets and engine serious neglect. There is also an incentive to down-tune vehicle engines (car performance), in order to make them fit into specific market and even, insurance categories. This means that more often than not a ‘lower’ model is in fact, just a down-tuned ‘higher’ model, with exactly the same engine in both. Therefore there is enough tolerance to tune your engine and give you noticeable gains without coming close to the engine limits.
